چکیده

The current study examined one way in which people learn complex causal relations from covariation. When participants were presented with covariation information between X and Y and covariation information between Y and Z only, they were willing to infer a causal relationship between X and Z, although it is not warranted by the evidence. Furthermore, the perceived strength of the terminal relationship was tied to the perceived strength of the intermediate relationships, as manipulated through the order of evidence. These results imply that people do not follow normative, contigency-based theories, but instead carry out a hypothesis-testing process and combine piecemeal relationships into an overarching causal induction.

Running head: TRANSITIVE REASONING IN CAUSAL CHAINS Transitive Reasoning Distorts Induction in Causal Chains

A probabilistic causal chain ABC may intuitively appear to be transitive: If A probabilistically causes B, and B probabilistically causes C, A probabilistically causes C. However, probabilistic causal relations are only transitive if the so-called Markov condition holds. In two experiments, we examined how people make probabilistic judgments about indirect relationships AC in causal chains A...

Discovering Causal Chains by Integrating Plan Recognition and Sequential Pattern Mining

In this paper we define the notion of causal chains. Causal chains are a particular kind of sequential patterns that reflect causality relations according to background knowledge. We also present an algorithm for mining causal chains from a collection of action traces. We run this algorithm on a realworld domain and observe that causal chains can be computed efficiently by quickly identifying i...

Hierarchical Bayesian models as formal models of causal reasoning

knowledge can come in various forms, and it may form complex hierarchies. The most abstract form of knowledge may be called causal principles, which probably include the assumption that causes precede their effects, that nothing happens without a cause, and that causes generate their effect unless prevented by an inhibitory factor (Audi 1995). A fundamental assumption might also be that a manip...

The Causal Role of Right Frontopolar Cortex in Moral Judgment, Negative Emotion Induction, and Executive Control

Introduction: Converging evidence suggests that both emotional and cognitive processes are critically involved in moral judgment, and may be mediated by discrete parts of the prefrontal cortex. The current study aimed at investigating the mediatory effect of right Frontopolar Cortex (rFPC) on the way that emotions affect moral judgments.  Methods: Six adult patients affected by rFPC and 10 hea...

A Transitivity Heuristic of Probabilistic Causal Reasoning

In deterministic causal chains the relations „A causes B’ and „B causes C’ imply that „A causes C’. However, this is not necessarily the case for probabilistic causal relationships: A may probabilistically cause B, and B may probabilistically cause C, but A does not probabilistically cause C, but rather ¬C. The normal transitive inference is only valid when the Markov condition holds, a key fea...
